![]() Peripheral nerves are made up of many axons, which are like long, thin wires that carry electrical signals between the body and the brain. The autonomic nervous system controls all of the important tasks in our body that occur without us even thinking about them, like controlling our heartbeat, blood pressure, and digestion. Part of the somatic nervous system, sensory nerves (known as the afferent nervous system) send signals back to the brain and spinal cord from the rest of the body. Part of the somatic nervous system, motor nerves (also known as the efferent nervous system) send signals from the brain and spinal cord to the rest of the body to control movement. The somatic nervous system is responsible for voluntary movement, and the autonomic nervous system controls involuntary activity. There are two main parts of the peripheral nervous system. Nerve damage generally refers to the peripheral nervous system. ![]() The peripheral nervous system includes the nerves that branch out from the brain and spinal cord and extend to other parts of your body (your arms, legs, face, chest, and abdomen to name a few). ![]() The central nervous system is composed of the brain and spinal cord. ![]() The body has two nervous systems: the central nervous system and the peripheral nervous system. ![]()
